Free radio donut advert

Bike Wise has created a free radio 'donut' advert for event co-ordinators who are planning on placing advertising with their local radio network. The format of the advert is known as a 'donut' because it has a blank 11 second segment in the middle that allows room for you to insert local information. There is no obligation to use this free resource but it may provide valuable continuity with Bike Wise's scheduled radio network promotion.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Challenge about?

The Bike Wise Challenge is about encouraging people who don't normally ride to hop on a bike, give it a go and have fun. That's why the competition rewards those who achieve the highest staff participation rates.

You just need to try and get as many of your colleagues to hop on a bike during the Challenge period. They can ride wherever they feel comfortable for 10 minutes or 2kms. The more times they ride gives them a greater chance of winning a prize.

There are some great prizes up for grabs so make sure that you log into the website and record the cycling you complete each day, between 1 February to 28 February 2010. If you miss a day, you won't be disqualified, but you'll miss out on being eligible for that day’s daily prize.

How to register

Firstly, check if your organisation is already registered. If it is not registered, go to the registration page and choose 'Register an Organisation'. Follow the process to register your organisation, and register yourself as a participant.

If your organisation is already registered then just go to the registration page, select your organisation from the drop-down list and register yourself as a participant in that organisation.

Now all you have to do is encourage as many of your colleagues as possible to go on to the website, register themselves and have a go at cycling once during the Challenge!

Logging your trips

Once the Challenge begins, use the Log Trip page to enter any cycling that you do.  Each participant must enter their own trip details.

Live results will be shown throughout the Challenge so you can see how well you, your department and your organisation are going.

How are the results calculated?

Percentage participation is calculated by dividing the "total number of employees who biked (and registered their biking online)" by the "total number of employees in the organisation".

Note that where regional branches have been registered as separate organisations, participation will be counted toward the efforts of each branch individually, and not included in the results of any parent organisations.

What are the rules?

  1. Participants just need to bike once for a minimum of 10mins or 2km
  2. All biking counts (with the exception of stationary bikes)
  3. No motorised bikes allowed. Cycles only.
  4. Honesty is essential for this competition to work. Please be honest and show the integrity that reflects your business practice.
  5. Only biking done between the Challenge start and finish dates will count.
  6. If there is evidence of cheating the whole organisation will be disqualified.
  7. All participants must be employees of the organisation.
  8. In the event of a draw in any of the size categories, the winner will be the organisation that has the highest percentage of "Rookie" cyclists on their team. A "Rookie" cyclist is someone who usually never bikes, or who bikes only a few times a year. This data is collected in the survey form that everyone fills out when registering for the Challenge.
  9. The minimum size of an organisation or department is 3 people, even if the organisation employs less people than 3.
  10. If a regional branch of an organisation registers itself as a separate organisation, participation will be counted toward the efforts of that branch only, and not accrued to any parent organisations.
  11. To win a national prize a minimum of 10% or of your department or organisation must participate in the Bike Wise Challenge.
  12. The Judges' decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

What are the size categories?

There five size categories for your organisation (or department) to compete in:

  • Very small: 3 - 6 employees
  • Small: 7 - 24 employees
  • Medium: 25 - 99 employees
  • Large: 100 - 499 employees
  • Very Large: 500 + employees

What are the Regions?

You can win the Participation Award by getting the highest percentage of staff riding a bike for your size category in your region. The 15 regions are:

  • Northland
  • Auckland
  • Waikato
  • BOP
  • Taranaki
  • Manawatu/Wanganui
  • Gisborne/Hawkes Bay
  • Wellington/Wairarapa
  • Nelson/Tasman
  • Marlborough
  • Canterbury
  • Otago
  • Southland
  • West Coast
  • Nationwide (for organisations with offices in more than one region)

What can I win?

Prizes for 2010 will include spot prizes for every day of the Bike Wise Challenge. We are giving away a $100 Avanti voucher and a $50 Ground Effect voucher every day for 28 days.

New for 2010 - we have a Hoyts double movie pass to give away each day to a top encourager. All you need to do is get someone to ride a bike (who hasn't biked in over a year) and you will go in the draw to win.

There are three Avanti bikes as prizes that anyone taking part could win.

The top organisation in each size category will receive a voucher towards a morning tea shout (10 to be won). The top organisation and department in each region and size category will recieve a framed certificate to display in their office - and don't forget the bragging rights!!!

Remember, this is not a competition to see who can cycle the furthest during the month - it's about getting people to try riding a bike, and to try making some short journeys by bike rather than by car.  We encourage you to set your own goals during the month and challenge yourself to achieve them. Don't forget to reward yourself for all your efforts!

Why Register a Department?

Registering your department means you compete against other departments of the same size. So if your department does well you can win prizes, even if your organisation overall does not.

It's also a chance to set up internal competitions and get the various departments in your organisation competing against each other. This is a great way to get your whole organisation's participation rate up.

Where can I view previous results?

Spreadsheets of previous results are available on this website. View previous results.

How can I register without an email address?

You need an email address to be able to register online. If you don't have a work email address, one option is to setup an address with a free webmail provider such as Yahoo! or Hotmail.

When do registrations for the Bike Wise Challenge close?

Participants may register until the end of the Challenge period (28 February 2010). They don't need to have biked every day during that time, they only need to have biked once for their participation to count.

How can I change my organisation name/size other details?

If you are the organisation coordinator (this is usually the person that registered the organisation) login and go to 'My Organisation'. You should be able to see a 'modify details' link. Clicking on the 'modify details' link will present you with a form that allows you to update the name, size, correct spelling mistakes or typos and other details for your organisation.

How can I change my department name/size other details?

If you are the department coordinator (this is usually the person that registered the department) login and go to 'My Organisation'. You should be able to see a 'modify details' link. Clicking on the 'modify details' link will present you with a form that allows you to update the name, size, correct spelling mistakes or typos and other details for your department.

Why can't I register more than one or department?

A participant may only be a coordinator for one organisation or department. So if you want to set up another department, you will firstly need to transfer your coordinator duties to another participant within your organisation. To do this, click on the 'modify details' link and select a new coordinator from the people registered in your department (nb this link is only available to department coordinators).

Our organisation has been registered twice - how can I remove one?

If more than one person registers an organisation, it will appear more than once in the drop-down menu in the registration page. It will also usually result in participants registering under different instances of the organisation. If this has happened, please use the contact form to let us know, so that we can merge all the participants under one instance of the organisation, and delete the other one.

Should I include colleagues that are ill, or on holiday, in the organisation size?

It's very likely that most organisations will have people who cannot participate because they are ill, or on holiday, or for another reason. However, these staff should still be included in your official 'organisation size' figure.

Can a coordinator log participants' biking all in one go?

No - currently, biking can only be recorded for the participant that is currently logged in. This may change for future events.

What is the last day to log my biking?

The final day to log your kms on the website is Tuesday 2 March 2010.

Mayoral Challenge

2010 Mayoral Challenge

This month nearly 50 New Zealand towns and cities are competing for the title of Cycle Mad City by getting as many people as possible to follow the mayor on a fun bike ride. Rain or shine, Kiwi's around the country are showing us how much they love their bikes by turning out in force behind their mayor.

A point is given for each participant, and the winning town is the one who gets the highest percentage of their population out on a bike behind the Mayor. Good luck to all the towns and cities taking part this year.

Tallying the points: Coordinators, please download the points summary sheet and submit it by Monday 8th March for your results to count.
