Please find below relevant information for Bike Wise Mayoral Challenge co-ordinators
Updated: 20 October 2009
A Mayoral Challenge can be held on any Saturday or Sunday between 1 February and 28 February 2010. We recommend that you pick a date that best suits your Mayor and your city or district. Alternatively, you can hold your Mayoral Challenge on a weekday evening if that suits your community better.
The Mayoral Challenge is a national event where Mayors are 'challenged' to get the greatest number of people cycling behind them and win the coveted title of most Cycle Mad City. The town or city that has the highest percentage of their population participating will win. There are three award categories:
We encourage you to invite Councillors, senior council management, road planners, transport engineers, business leaders and journalists to your Mayoral Challenge. Having them on the ride helps gain their buy-in and support for cycling developments and initiatives in your region.
The Mayoral Challenge is a great event that generates a lot of buzz around cycling in your region. It is an ideal event for Councils to run and/or participate in during Bike Wise Month.
Online Mayoral Challenge registrations will be open from 9th November to 11th December 2009.
The sponsorship arrangements for the Mayoral Challenge have now been confirmed.
All Mayoral Challenge coordinators will receive a kit containing the following promotional resources and items which can be used as prizes or given away to participants on the day:
To run an official Mayoral Challenge and be eligible to receive a coordinators kit, bike and cycling jersey for the Mayor to use on the day you must be able to meet the below criteria:
The Mayoral Challenge is a community event open to the public to attend.
The Mayoral Challenge is held in a public place and all cyclists who attend are invited to partake free of charge.
The Mayoral Challenge is promoted to the general public to participate.
The Mayor of your region MUST agree to attend and cycle in the Challenge.
Allocation of event incentives and coordinator kits is made at the discretion of the Bike Wise Programme.
You can also order extra resources from us. We sell all our merchandise at cost with the aim of providing good quality, useful resources to people at the lowest price possible.
If you would like to purchase anything we encourage you to do soon as we want to ensure we get it to you on time for your events.
We’d love to be there on the day, however, we don’t have the resources to attend every event during Bike Wise Month. Therefore it’s up to you to ensure an accurate count of the people on your ride is taken on the day.
Having two people at the finish line with clickers/counters would probably be the easiest and most accurate way to count the number of people on your ride. Then they can reconcile their final counts with each other to ensure an accurate count.
You’ll also need the Mayoral Challenge Event Summary Sheet (XLS 17 KB) to send in your final count and details of your population.

The details of your event will be automatically added to the Bike Wise website when you register. You will not be able to complete your registration until you provide your event details. You will be able to log back in to update your event details at a later date if you don't have every little detail confirmed when you register.
The details you provide will not be checked first before being posted on our website, therefore it is important that the information you provided is correct and complete.
You may also wish to promote your event on other sport event listing websites, such as www.playsport.co.nz.
When you register your event you will be able to order a selection of Bike Wise posters to help raise awareness of Bike Wise Month and promote events in your area.
In addition to this, you can create customised posters for your own Mayoral Challenge event, by downloading the poster template and adding your details and the relevant logos.
To make it quick and easy for you to promote your Mayoral Challenge event, we have created a media release template for event coordinators to use. Besides helping to promote and raise awareness of your Mayoral Challenge, using the template will help to spread key Bike Wise messages around the country during Bike Wise Month.
All you will need to do is download the media release, fill in your local information and send out to your local media.
Avanti will once again be sponsoring the Mayoral Challenge and will provide Avanti Spirit 1.0 bikes, helmets and jerseys for the Mayor to use and give away at your event. To show our appreciation of Avanti's support and to help gain their support in future years we encourage you to include their logos on any marketing material you use, eg. posters, fliers, adverts, web pages etc.
There is a Bike Wise Month logo available for use, supported by guidelines to assist you. Placement is not mandatory, however, it provides consistent brand awareness for the Bike Wise Programme at a local and national level. We welcome the use of the logos on all promotional material relating to Bike Wise supported activity.
